Science is starting to uncover what the Scandinavias have known for centuries — heat, light and thermal bathing remedy sickness and give bodies back their vigor. See the science — just two studies out of hundreds:
Melt muscle pain with 25-49% more heat shock proteins
Heat shock proteins (HSPS) protect cells against stress and injuries, increase muscle mass and regrowth, and fast-track muscle recovery. Multiple studies have shown that heat shock proteins increase in response to heat exposure in people as they do in animals.
A 2012 study showed that people who stayed in a heat chamber at 73°C (163°F) for thirty minutes saw a 49% increase of heat shock protein HSP72 levels, while a 2006 study (pictured left) showed that animals put into hyperthermia created 25% more HSPs than their not heat exposed counterparts.
Strengthen your heart and lower your cardiac risk by 45%
A 2015 study in Finland with more than 2300 participants over 20 years showed that increased sauna use nearly halved their risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), fatal coronary heart disease (CHD), and fatal cardiovascular disease (CVD). Blood pressure drops, blood flow improves, and heart rate increases to an average 143 beat/min — that’s typically as much as after a medium intensity workout.
